Online Crochet Class in the Works

December 1, 2009 at 6:03 pm (Crochet, Flotsam, Knit) (, , , )

I’m in the second day of Stephanie Japel’s teacher workshop for creating online knitting classes.  I only plan to make one actual knitting class though and that one will be to help knitters explore crochet at beginning or more advanced levels.  It’s been great fun so far, we are discovering the inner workings of ning.com and tweaking its features to create our teaching platform.

I’ve taught beadworking and storytelling online as part of an amazingly innovative education project.  It was a few years ago though and our students were subject to the whims of high school computer labs and slow connections so we kept the high tech to a minimum.  I look forward to adding video to these new classes.

A peek at what I have so far…

This is a sample network in process.

The network I’m creating is currently private and will become the hub for classes that are taught by me.  There are several amazing designers at work on their own ideas as well–it will be great to see what comes from this collective effort.

Home Cure week 2

October 21, 2009 at 3:29 pm (Craft, Crochet, Healthy!, Home) (, , , , , )

I’m really happy so far with joining Apartment Therapy for an 8 week ‘home cure.’  So far I have been able to make small changes and enjoy my home space more including baking in the kitchen, sewing in the living room, and listening to music, doing yoga, and crocheting in the living room and back yard (not all at the same time!).

For this week:

Clean the kitchen, make a new recipe at the end of the week:  With two housemates and not enough space for all our food, this is a challenge.  In order to clean the kitchen, I need to find  fruit, grains, and spice storage solutions.  I’m thinking three baskets attached to our open wall for fruit, I’ve been collecting jars for grains, and not sure yet what to do about spices.  Making a recipe will be easy as I’m in the habit from the last few weeks of baking.  I made my own granola last night and have plans for pumpkin cookies this weekend!

Define my style, continue style tray: Happening at twine.com, my style at the moment is temporary living while enjoying what I have!  This mainly includes lovely outdoor space and lots of crafty, quiet moments.

Floor Plan: I don’t think I’ll do this part as our floor plan is okay as is and I don’t plan on changing out any furniture unless I find a great sideboard/craft cupboard for the dining room.

Fresh Flowers: Easy one as there are sweet peas blooming in the front and they smell heavenly!  I also have a small arrangement of fall leaves and acorns at the dining table.

Still to do:

Clean one surface, put extra things in the outbox: This will be the couch in my bedroom!  It currently holds clean laundry, two dresses for the dry cleaners, my meditation cushion, winter hats, a wooden tray of ‘important’ things, and several sewing projects.  I would like my couch to be both meditative and a bit of a crafty space.  It’s also what I see from my bed, so it’s nice if it feels relaxing and is integrated into the rest of my bedroom.  I would like to add my staghorn fern and a few prints, perhaps re-arrange the shelf above and create a lighting solution.

Fix one thing: I think this will be our teak rockers.  They need oil and the seats replaced.  It’s one more way to enjoy the backyard ocean view!

Yoga and Anemia

October 14, 2009 at 10:35 am (Healthy!, Yoga, bikram) (, , , , , , , , )

A few times a week I see another student who comes to class and tells me they have anemia and thus are tired, dizzy, etc. in their daily life as well as during Hatha Yoga practice.  As a vegetarian, I have been diagnosed with Anemia twice in my life and have found ways to come out of it as well.  It can be a long process, but the life gain is so worth it all!

In support of all of you who also have this most common nutritional deficeit, here is what I have learned:

There are multiple causes of Anemia and thus multiple versions as manifested.  The most common, and the type I’ll refer to is the result of normal to excessive blood loss and insufficient intake or absorption of iron.  This is called Iron Deficiency Anemia and is characterized by fatigue, paleness for your skin type, yellowing of the eyes, and shortness of breath during ‘normal’ exertion.  A blood test can give you the specific information to determine if you have Iron Deficiency Anemia, another type of Anemia, or don’t have it at all.  In the U.S. 20% of women who are childbearing age have Iron Deficiency Anemia.  Less than 2% of men do.  All this is from Wikipedia.

What follows is what I do about it from a holistic health approach.

The first thing that happens if diagnosed within the Western medicine system for Anemia is a prescription/recommendation for Iron pills in some form.  There are several things usually not told to these patients:

  • Iron is absorbed with the help of Vitamin C at the rate of 5mg per dose maximum.  Most pills have 50-60 times that dose to make them look impressive.  Your body does not absorb this and thus Iron pills are famous for affecting digestion in a negative/slowing down way. A high rate of Iron absorption (even from food) is 25%.  It’s much less for pills (another reason for the higher dose).
  • The US recommended Iron intake for women age 11-50 is 18mg.  Thus you will need to make an effort to eat something high in Iron at least three times a day to both reach the intake level as well as actually absorb it!
  • Calcuim inhibits Iron absorption and should not be taken at the same time.  {Calcium works well with Magnesium and Zinc and is often seen in that combo now.  It is also recommended to combine Calcium with a meal that includes fat and if you take vitamin D as a suppliment, do so at the same time.}
  • It takes 30 days for your body to go through a rebuild cycle of new blood cells.  These are the cells that will be benefiting from your nutritional intake.  They will not build more oxygen carrying (fatigue-fighting!) abilities unless you create the demand by exercising regularly.  My intuition tells me pranayama breathing is also good for this.

So that’s just if you are going to go the pill route! But, there are much better choices to make sure your nutritional intake is up to par.  I now combine whole food-based supplements with foods naturally higher in Iron and space them out throughout the day for maximum benefit.  I also continue to enjoy yoga and other exercise, even if it puts me to the point of breathing deeply, especially if it does, as this creates the demand for higher functioning red blood cells.

The supplements I currently take for my vegetarian and some dairy lifestyle are:

  • Floravital: a vegetable and fruit concentrated juice which is high in Iron, B vitamins, and includes rose hip for natural vitamin C.
  • Spirulina in pill form (for easy carrying along or counting).
  • Amazing Grass supplement drinks which are largely wheatgrass and delicious.

My favorite Iron rich snacks are:

  • 8mg ~1cup Dried Apricots with 2Tbl chocolate chips (dried peaches are even 2mg higher per cup.)
  • 2.2 mg ~3cups Popcorn with 2Tbl nutritional yeast

My favorite main meals that are great for Iron and vitamin combos are:

  • 5mg ~Scrambled egg with  1 cup chopped Kale (breakfast of champions!)
  • 9.3mg ~1.5 cups cooked Spelt ‘oat’ meal with 1 Tbl molasses (plus spelt has 10g protein/cup!)
  • 5mg ~1 cup Black or Kidney beans in a burrito
  • 5mg ~1 cup Lentils as Dahl. Yum!

Things I’m wary of:

  • ‘Fortified’ cereals
  • Iron pills in all their forms
  • Lists of recommended food that include things like beef but not kale, spelt, and beans!

I’d love to hear more of your favorites!

The Home Cure Week 1

October 12, 2009 at 6:30 pm (Home) (, , , )

I’ve joined the Home Cure (and Green Cure) on Apartment Therapy as it was so fun last fall to watch AT users brighten up their homes with the eventual finale of throwing a party in their fresh space.

It’s been a year since I moved to San Francisco and I’ve been honoring and celebrating creating a home here.  I live in a space with natural beauty and quiet while at the same time connected with the life of the city.  Last night as I was walking home, I again noticed my path from work is a path from civilization into nature:  the homes I pass steadily increase in size of outdoor gardens and then it becomes forest.  I appreciate so much about where I live, but I also know that I can transform my space to work better for my lifestyle (at least the one I aspire to!) and create a great space to share with guests.

This week our assignment is to set our intentions for the next 8 weeks.

My first ideas:

  • re-pot plants and gather more
  • organize closets so all our gear fits better and makes more intuitive sense
  • create spaces for my work in my bedroom, but keep them out of the visual area of the bed/relaxing space
  • find/make a credenza/sideboard for our dining area–craft cupboard!
  • make a quilt and pillows for my bed and bedroom couch
  • create and hang artwork

For the Green Cure (which is to eco-up your life)

  • go through my clothes and re-make some, give away the rest of the extras
  • switch out my current bed back to my organic wool bed–cozy!
  • tune up my truck–new fuel filter, get a tire gauge, etc.
  • get a bike helmet!
  • clean up my computer life–less paper, more organized

The space I have is shared with housemates, so that poses certain limits as well as adds potential for collaborative creation.  The spaces I want to work on include:

  • smallish entry way that leads to a split level (fung shui ouch!)
  • kitchen with some good plant space already growing redwoods, orchids, and avacado
  • open living and dining area which we have arranged once, but could be better still
  • my bedroom above the sea with a little sitting and crafting area
  • the backyard- really our favorite place with teak rockers and ocean view
  • the little front yard which catches morning sun and could use a sweet bench
  • two bathrooms, one also a laundry space

I have plans for each and am looking forward to this one step at a time.  Now to gather inspiration!

How fun is it to be running my morning errands by traveling through the woods!  I arrived home just in time to catch a treasury spot and created this one.  Inspired by the fog lifting and the golden light breaking through.

Crochet Love!

September 21, 2009 at 11:59 am (Craft, Crochet, Flotsam, etsy) (, , , , )

It seems like crochet is gathering more attention lately–perhaps it’s the approaching equinox when those of us in the North start to make the switch to darker nights and seek out the small elements of cozy during the day.  This week, two lovely bloggers and Etsy sellers Ponder and Stitch and Wiley Valentine featured my recent work amidst some other delightful crochet pieces.  Also, My Milk Toof reminds me of my years in Japan and makes me laugh on a cold morning.  Enjoy!

Yes, so little milk teeth are not really related to crochet, but somehow they make me happy in the same way!
